NEW PARADIGM THEATRE’S INCLUSIVITY WORKSHOPS

In the Summer of 2025, New Paradigm Theatre (NPT) will produce Hairspray. This bright, funny, and joyfully subversive musical focuses on a group of teenagers in 1962 Baltimore who challenge the status quo by pushing for racial integration on their favorite television program. Resplendent with wit, charm, and humor, Hairspray is at its roots a story about how to stand up and fight for equal rights for people of all races, genders, and sizes.

In programming Hairspray, we knew we wanted to provide our community with resources to tell a story about past and present racial discrimination in America. We engaged NPT Board Member Dr. Rydell Harrison, an educator currently working with the CT Center for Social Change, to run Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) workshops with our youth participants during the rehearsal process, giving our emerging artists tools to talk about how engaging with this subject matter makes them feel and ensuring that our BIPOC students (who make up more than 50% of our participants each year) feel safe and are being centered in this work.

But, as a company dedicated to promoting social responsibility and fostering creative problem-solvers, leaders, and global citizens, we started to feel there was more we could do.

After many discussions with our Youth Board, local community members, and Dr. Harrison, we have decided to put our time, energy, and resources into these workshops and commit ourselves throughout the next six months to doing what the characters of Hairspray do – using music, dance, and our voices to challenge discrimination and promote the values of equality, inclusion, and civil rights across Fairfield County. Dr. Harrison will be working with 15-20 of our most engaged youth participants on DEI leadership training in March. Those students will then spend April, May, and June going to schools to run peer-to-peer inclusivity workshops for other youth. Three schools that know our values and work ethic have already committed to bringing us in – now we’re hoping to expand our reach and share this opportunity as widely as possible. Audiences will be invited to join us for our production of Hairspray, where our leadership cohort will continue to engage their cast, crew, and the wider community through additional, more targeted workshops and post-show talkbacks
